Techiaith TTS privacy policy

Bangor University (“we” or “us” or “our”) respects the privacy of our users (“user” or “you”). This Privacy Policy explains what information is handled when you use the Techiaith TTS text-to-speech application for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Android and Windows (the “Application”). It is a short document, because the Application handles almost none. Please read this Privacy Policy carefully. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THE TERMS OF THIS PRIVACY POLICY, PLEASE DO NOT USE THE APPLICATION.
We reserve the right to make changes to this Privacy Policy at any time and for any reason. We will alert you about any changes by updating the “Last updated” date of this Privacy Policy. You are encouraged to periodically review this Privacy Policy to stay informed of updates.
This Privacy Policy does not apply to the third-party store from which you install the Application (Google Play or the Apple App Store), or to the download page for the Windows installer, which may collect and use data about you under their own terms. We are not responsible for any of the data collected by any such third party.
Collection of your information
Personal data
The Application collects no personal data of any kind. Every word is turned into speech on your own device by a neural voice model that runs locally. The Application has no network code; on Android it does not request the internet permission, and on Windows neither the speech engine nor its companion app makes network connections. Specifically, we do not collect, store, transmit or share the text you type or that other apps ask the Application to speak, the audio it produces, device or advertising identifiers, usage analytics, crash reports, or your location, contacts, photos, microphone input or any other device data. We run no servers for the Application, there are no user accounts, and there are no third-party analytics, advertising or crash-reporting services.
Text you ask the Application to speak
When you select Techiaith TTS as a system voice, other apps such as VoiceOver, TalkBack, Narrator, NVDA, Speak Screen, Select to Speak, Read Aloud in Word and reading apps send it text to be spoken. That text is held in memory only for as long as it takes to produce the audio. It is never written to a log, saved to a file or transmitted.
What stays on your device
The Application stores two things in its own private storage: the voice you chose and your interface language, so that it can remember your selection; and the voice model and pronunciation dictionaries, which are bundled with the Application and unpacked on first run so that speech works offline. On Windows the voice model and dictionaries are installed alongside the program, and the voices are registered with Windows so that other programs can find them. Everything is removed when you uninstall the Application. Nothing leaves your device.
Use of your information
As we hold no information about you, we make no use of it. The Application writes speech timing measurements to the operating system’s own log to help us keep the voices fast. These entries contain timing numbers only, never the text being spoken. They stay on your device under your control, and we see them only if you deliberately send us a log.
For the purposes of counting the number of people using the Application, we count the number of downloads and updates reported by the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. We do not collect user personal details.
Children
The Application is suitable for all ages and collects no data from anyone, including children.
Security of your information
Because the Application transmits nothing and stores no personal information, there is no personal information of yours for us to secure, disclose, correct or delete. For Bangor University’s data protection guidance more generally, see the University’s legal compliance pages.
