Lleisiwr

The purpose of the project is to create personal synthetic voices for patients who are about to lose their ability to speak as a result of conditions such as Motor Neurone Disease and Throat Cancer.
The Language Technologies Unit has created a platform that enables patients with the help of speech therapists to create their own authentic voice in Welsh and English. Speech therapists will usually refer patients to the provision, with the patients signing a consent form to enable the project to store their voice and create a synthetic voice for them.

Background

This project is a partnership between the NHS and the Language Technologies Unit, Canolfan Bedwyr. It is funded under the Welsh Government’s Technology and Welsh Language Grant Scheme. It ran until March 31, 2018 as a pilot project. Since October 2020 you can create one bilingual voice on the Voice over platform instead of separate Welsh and English voices.
Generate your Voice
The process of producing the synthetic voices is web based, with patients recording a text that has been provided to them in the form of Welsh and English prompts. That will enable them to produce their personal bilingual synthetic voice.
